At Nicobar we’re creating a modern Indian way of living, dressing, and looking at the world. This is at the heart of everything we do.
We’re a company that believes in culture as much as commerce, and that journeys are usually as worthy as destinations. These are the stories we’re telling through our product and through a community.
We are a tight ecosystem of people crazy about the design and digital worlds. Our core team works out of our lush garden studio in Delhi (we call it the Treehouse), where designers sketch and drape, the digital teams write and code, and the gardeners plant broccoli and tomatoes, but our people are spread across the country, in our stores, our warehouses, and our café.
One of the things I will always be proud of is the team we built, continue to build and the culture we aspire to live. We knew we wanted to build a team that believed the best comes when the East and West come together…quietly confident in India’s roots, humble yet looking outward, combining history and geography.
It’s this passion for design meets digital and East meets West that led me over 250 initial interviews to find the first nine people to join the journey. We found our team over cocktails at Diva or chaat at Nathu's, via serendipitous marriages that brought folk from Bombay to Delhi and others from Chelsea, New York back to India!
[body_text_normal]Pockets. We cannot live without them. Obvious, you might say, but we’re not talking any pockets, we mean pockets for women, an almost revolutionary addition to women’s garments during the Victorian era. For reasons still inexplicable to us, many designers continue to be erratic with the inclusion of pockets in clothing designed for women. But even before we launched there was a common refrain on our design floor: pockets in everything![/body_text_normal][horizontal_banner_3images src1='https://cdn.staging.nicobar.com/media/uploads/froala_editor/images/1511190882mridu-pockets-588-x-734-three.gif' url1='https://www.nicobar.com/catalogue/boat-cropped-pants-silver-sage_4888/' src2='https://cdn.staging.nicobar.com/media/uploads/froala_editor/images/1511190888mridu-588-x-734-three3.gif' url2='https://www.nicobar.com/catalogue/madagascar-denim-shirt_2772/' src3='https://cdn.staging.nicobar.com/media/uploads/froala_editor/images/1511190895mridu-GIF.gif' url3='https://www.nicobar.com/catalogue/oceanic-scarf_5029/'][horizontal_banner_2images src1='https://cdn.staging.nicobar.com/media/uploads/froala_editor/images/1511192726aeroplane-1.jpg' url1='https://www.nicobar.com/catalogue/orient-top-silver-sage_4903/' src2='https://cdn.staging.nicobar.com/media/uploads/froala_editor/images/1511192891aeroplane.jpg' url2='https://www.nicobar.com/catalogue/kasumi-pants-indigo_6003/'][body_text_normal]There’s quite nothing as satisfying as finding the perfect outfit with pockets. It means you could possibly go without a bag. Hold a drink and a plate of food with ease. Or even just tuck your hands away because you feel like it. That it warrants a shriek of delight (seen often in our changing rooms) is testimony to just how essential that little detail is. It baffles us how an industry that largely focuses on women can repetitively fail the very market it caters to. We’ve no reservation about bags, but pockets are a different breed of convenience altogether. Whether they’re deep and large enough for our phones, or slight for keys, a stick of gum, and an eyeliner, they’re a functional essential to every woman’s wardrobe.[/body_text_normal][horizontal_banner_3images src1='https://cdn.staging.nicobar.com/media/uploads/froala_editor/images/1511193146FINAL-3-MRIDU-PIOCK.jpg' url1='https://www.nicobar.com/catalogue/orient-top-silver-sage_4903/' src2='https://cdn.staging.nicobar.com/media/uploads/froala_editor/images/1511191208Pockets-588-x-734-two.gif' src3='https://cdn.staging.nicobar.com/media/uploads/froala_editor/images/1511191213Pockets-588-x-734-one.gif' url3='https://www.nicobar.com/catalogue/akura-maxi-check-dress-grey-white_3807/'][body_text_normal]It’s no surprise our womenswear pieces are designed with pockets that are destined to hold your odds and ends, or so you get to stick your hands in and strut around without a care in the world. Our pockets announce their presence loud and clear; they’re roomy, in multiples, adorned with all sort of detail and patchwork, and look good on every frame, plus they’re a fierce voice against patriarchy and its cousins. Men have always had their pockets, and so should women.
Go on. Pocket a little bit of sunshine. With both hands.
